Previous Meeting Summary

March 22:  ATS Plant Tour (Joint Meeting with IEEE)

ATS gave a presentation on the controls and automation including Devicenet and Ethernet technologies used at ATS. He will also talk about the emerging technologies in process controls and automation.   ATS - Automation Tooling Systems is the worlds leading industrial automation company with 4,200 employees and 26 facilities worldwide dedicated to designing and manufacturing advanced factory automation systems, custom automation equipment, standard automation products and turn-key assembly machinery, as well as high-volume precision components, sub-assemblies, solar cells and solar modules.

February 15: Radio Frequency Identification (Joint Meeting with IEEE)

Touted as the next technological answer, there still exists an aura of mystery about what radio frequency identification (RFID) is and how it can help. Adding to the confusion are reports of its limitations, how it will erode privacy and failed implementations. Our thanks to Dr. Kevin Berisso and Mr Todd Myers for providing a frank and open discussion of what RFID is, what it's limitations are and how it has helped and will continue to help manufacturing. Presented by the Center for Automatic Identification at Ohio University , this vendor-independent session addressed some of the questions and concerns regarding RFID. Included in the session was a hands-on period where we were able to interact and experience the technology. You can learn more about the Center for Automatic Identification at their website.  www.ohio.edu/aidc
